After experimenting in the previous stage briefly with inverting my images, I decided to look into it further.

 

I like how inverting the image makes different detail more noticable, and how the feel of the image changes. I then went on to experiment predominantly with duplication and blending, focusing on shapes and patterns that were created by this process.
